Chapter 16
1. Style can have multiple meanings. It can be used to refer to a design technique referring to the overall look of the piece. For example if a piece had parts that look shiny and cold, it may have a metallic style to it. The idea is convey more in the piece and by allowing all of the visual elements to work together. A style can also be used to represent an entire movement of art.
Art as an artistic movement can be used to identify a certain period in art history. For example Abstract expressionism was a style from the 1940’s and 1950’s. Designers can use this to convey certain time frames and ideals. For example by using simple letters and washed out color, you could convey the idea of a gas station sign from the 50’s.
3. Style can also be used to convey meaning with the use of context. By changing the style of a piece you can convey different a context. For example a picture of a hand grenade would have a different context if it was in military green as it would if it looked to be drawn by a child’s crayon.
