The Futura Font
The Futura Font is a very simple geometric sans serif font that was developed in the 1920’s. Developed by Paul Renner Futura borrows from the Bauhaus school of design by very angular and geometric, having little frill, and displaying the shapes of letters in new way. At this time this was an entirely new idea in typography is oon gained momentum.
Many believe that Futura was the first Sans Serif font to gain wide acceptance, ushering in our massive use of it today. The Font uses geometric circles, squares and triangles to create a style and art of its own. It is currently the only type that as its own copyright.
Although not widely accepted at first the bold new face gained in popularity in the 1950’s and 60’s. Stanley Kubrick, one of my favorite directors, has been quoted as saying this is his favorite type. The international auto manufacturer, Volkswagen, adopted this font and still uses it on its logo. Over a century later its still widely used in marketing and loved by consumers.
Futura main historial contribution was in the 1930’s, with the acceptance of a Sans Serif Font. Its contribution continues to be very evident in modern graphics. You can see it in digital media where fonts like these are used to reduce pixelation, and even in modern political propaganda. There is not a specific era for Futura simply because it stands the test of time.
